ON THE LEADING EDGE
What's it like to work at a company on the leading edge? You're surrounded
by bright, highly skilled and motivated people who expect the best. And the
company strives to provide the best for its employees, from signing bonuses
and stock options to on-site day care facilities and fitness centers. A top
company knows that to keep its employees in today's competitive job market,
it must listen to its employees' suggestions for improvement. To get a
taste of such a workplace, consider the following suggestion printed in the
employee newsletter of a thriving company:
"I think tanning beds should be included in the new company Fitness Center.
Tanning has become a large part of the fitness scene and is accessible in
most gyms and workout centers.
"If the overall goal of the company Fitness Center is to promote health,
fitness, and well-being of employees, by providing tanning, you provide a
facility focused on the overall person--physical, mental, and emotional.
Tanning for the most part is for physical looks but also makes people look
healthier and feel more confident about themselves. This promotes mental
and emotional well-being as well as physical.
"The key ideas here are . . . (1) Employee Well-Being (2) On-site
convenience (3) Tanning could pay for itself if something like this is not 'in
the budget'."
Does your company provide on-site tanning? If not, you'll soon see your top
talent walking out the door to work for companies that do. And when that
happens, your company will lose the edge it needs to compete.
That would be a disaster. According to business continuance expert Al
Graffeo, "43 percent of the companies experiencing a disaster never re-open,
and an additional 29 percent close within two years. Seventy-five percent
of business who lose computer support are no longer able to conduct business
functions after only two weeks."
Obviously, your company can't afford not to.
