Jimmy Stewart Eulogized

With nothing to do on a Monday afternoon, I stopped by Jimmy Stewart's funeral service at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church on July 7. He and his family had occupied the same pew each Sunday, and it was in this pew that his stepson and daughters were seated on this memorable day.

Having only seen him once, in the Hollywood Christmas parade, I didn't exactly qualify as an invited guest. So I watched from across the street with a few hundred other onlookers.

I expected to see the dozens of celebrities who've worked with him over the decades, but I was quite disappointed. I did see Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hope (he was looking quite frail and due to join Stewart soon), Nancy Reagan, Esther Williams, and June Allyson. That's it. I was shocked. Had he made a lot of enemies, or just outlived all his celebrated friends?

Most of the spectators stayed until the end of the 45-minute service, myself included. Police held back the crowd, but allowed the press to get a closer look. When Bob Hope emerged the press swarmed around him and his car, but he and his wife ignored them. Nancy Reagan hurried to her car, pausing to give the reporters a smile and a wave.

By the time June Allyson came out, the police were beginning to leave. Fans raced across the street. Not to be outdone, I took off on my bike.

She was talking to everyone who spoke to her, posing for pictures with fans. She was enjoying the attention immensely.

Esther Williams came out of the church, but got less attention as she walked to the car she and Allyson shared. June welcomed photos and signed autographs all the way to the car, while Williams tried to avoid these inconveniences.

One last person of distinction was there: the cop who was slapped by Zsa Zsa Gabor. He's now reduced to directing traffic and managing crowds.

It was a memorable afternoon, but nothing compared to Danny Thomas's funeral in the church next door a few years earlier. That event had drawn two presidents (Reagan and Ford) and dozens of celebrities. Much like the assemblage I expect to witness at Bob Hope's funeral in the not-too-distant future.
